| Isla de Tenerife | Mount Teide in April Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 10:41 PM UTC
Hi everyone, hope someone can put me right on a couple of things.
1st: I read on Wikipedia that to climb the last 200 metres of Mount Teide a free permit must be obtained from the park office in Santa Cruz? Is this so? I was last in Tenerife in 1984 and climbed to the top without having to obtain a ticket. I will be taking my children 16 and 12 with me on the last 200 mtr climb, can the tickets not be obtained at Teide or from an office in Playa Las Americas? 2nd: Will the snow on Teide in the 1st 2 weeks of April make the 1st question pointless? Will there still be limited access via the cable car then? thanks for any help eyedot uk |

you need to obtain a permit in santa cruz.
it's free but a little complicated and they only hand out around 100 permits per day to avoid too much chaos on top of the mountain. my suggestion is to set aside half a day to get the permit and make a little day trip to santa cruz when you pick it up. santa cruz is a pleasant town. climbing teide in april should be no problem. i climbed it in january and the weather was fine.

Yes it is like Claus said above. I've used the cable car both in summer and winter. If there is snow the cable car do run, but you are not allowed to walk to the mountain top in any case. April weather should be fine (but quite cold on the top). The cable car do close in case of strong winds (quiet often) so it's good practice to phone them before traveling there. You can get the phone number when you ask for your climbing permit.
If you can't/want to go to Santa Cruz to get the permission, you still walk a couple of paths from the cable car top station with great views, so the trip is worth it in any case. The path leading the very top of the mountain is the one that has controlled access due the special fragility of this zone. And... in case you were thinking on... no, you can't cheat them, they really control the access ;)
