| Pisa | Transportation Viareggio to Pisa Airport Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 07:54 PM UTC
We are staying in Viareggio and have a 11:10am flight our of Pisa. Our departure will be on a Saturday in June 08. Is there direct train service from Viareggio to Pisa Airport? Is there bus service? How much time should I allow. I remember changing trains in Pisa years ago and it seems that we had to go down steps under the tracks and back up and with baggage this was not much fun so I'm trying to avoid it. Recommendations would be appreciated.

While the schedules for June are not out yet, I just looked at this coming Saturday, and there are no direct trains from Viareggio to the airport - all change at Pisa Centrale. You can see this for yourself at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html and entering "Viareggio" for the starting point and "Pisa Aeroporto" for the destination. There are frequent trains, but all do require a change at Pisa Centrale :-( .
I took a look at the airport website (www.pisa-airport.com) and at the bus system for Pisa (www.cpt.pisa.it - Italian only), and I didn't see a direct bus in either case. As you will see, if you take the train, the trip is between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on which train you take and the length of the connection in Pisa Centrale. Note that most but not all trains on this route (Viareggio to Pisa Centrale) are regional trains, which do not need (or even take) reservations - just go to the station, buy the tickets, validate, and go. Unfortunately, I don't have any magic words for the up and down of the changing tracks in Pisa Centrale...I suppose one possibility if you really hated that thought would be to roll your luggage out front to the taxi queue and just take a taxi to the airport...since the airport is not far, I think the fare should be very reasonable (from the airport to the city center is only 5 to 7 euro, according to the airport website, and you're closer than that...you'll hit the minimum fare pretty soon ;-) ). I imagine that you can contact your hotel for suggested limo services...to my surprise, the airport didn't list any, but I am sure there must be some that service your area... Bill
