| Lisbon | Trip to beach from Lisbon? Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 03:11 PM UTC
Hi, I'm going to be in Lisbon for several days later in the month and was thinking that I'd like to travel out to one of the beaches one day. Any suggestions on somewhere nice to go and the best way to get there by public transport. Also any random interesting ideas of things to see or do in Lisbon itself would be cool! Thanks.

Cascais and Estoril Coast by train is easy to go and fast, it does not take a lot.

Cascais is nice and only about 30 minutes on train. We had a week there a few years back, and travelled up to the city for sightseeing at the weekend (when Cascais got busy)

Cais do Sodre is the station for the coast
Make sure you have a night out with fado, preferably not in a tourist place.

Yes Cascais is easily reachable it's at the end of the train line from Sodré station in Lisbon, takes about 40 minutes. We were there in December three days in city and three at Cascais, very nice, plenty of beaches, seafront walks and restaurants in the town.

Cascais is an option as it was referred and you can combine beach with the touristic attractions of this village. BTW if it happens to be on Feb 23 have a look on
http://meetings.virtualtourist.com/meeting-4221-1- and join us for lunch. We are going to the beach side afterwards. But Cascais beaches are small. The larger area of beaches are in Carcavelos (on the north side just at the mouth of the river) on the way to Cascais (with train stop) or Guincho (usually windy -surf and windsurf championships take place here), some kms after Cascais easy accessible by bike or bus. Another option is to take the bus (or boat and bus) from Lisbon to Costa de Caparica (on the other side of the river) where begins the larger beach area around Lisbon -sand extends over 30km beach after beach. Like in Cascais there are many restaurants. Turquoise waters only some 40-60 kms south of Lisbon on Arrábida natural park facing Setúbal.... but no direct public transportation at this time of the year Enjoy

Here above there's a link. On the left side of the screen that you may have be connected with you'll see many beach (PRAIAS) names with some others yellow stars. The 5 yellow stars beach may be the better ones in Lisbon. Note: I'm a brazilian citizen. Cassio Pinto Viegas

Beaches are aplenty surrounding central Lisbon and all are readily accessible. But bear in mind that the water this time of year will be on the cold side still. If your intent would be just to take a stroll by the ocean/beach, the seaside resorts of Estoril and Cascais - as had been suggested - will make for a very pleasant and leisurely outing. The electric train which plies exclusively between Lisbon and the coastal towns ending up Cascais is the one quickest to take. The station is at Cais do Sodre by the waterfront. Take it to Estoril and from there, walk the entire stretch up to Cascais by the beautiful ocean promenade - a good 40mins to an hour of slow stroll. Do it in the afternoon and partake dinner in Cascais before heading back to Lisbon. The trains run all day til late night. Happy trails.
