Sydney locations and travel advice

Can anyone help me? I am due to move to Sydney on the 26/03 from the UK i have never been there before and also don't know anyone over there! I have a job at long bay correctional institute however i am looking at accommodation to share and don't want to be anywhere quite, i am mid 20's and love going out and socializing i also like shopping. i am from a small town in the UK near the beach which i tend to use for running. My concern with locations in Sydney is traveling to and from work safely been a young female and also times of travel. i will be working both early mornings and till late at night, and also nights and i am struggling to locate the perfect location with the travel options. could anyone please advise me on this matter? thanks

Hi. Long Bay gaol is actually in a fairly nice spot but living in the suburbs immediately around there could be considered fairly quiet. www.131500.info is the public transport website for Sydney so you could use the journey planner from anywhere you are considering looking at living to work (put in Long Bay Correctional Complex) to see what transport options there are for different times. I think it would be about a half hour bus trip from the city centre. If you want to live near the beach, Maroubra could be a good spot, easy to get to both work and the city. Or maybe Coogee which is a bit further up the coast.

Um not sure - you could try the trip planner on www.whereis.com to calculate how far it is. But you would have to consider that it is pretty hilly.

Coogee to Maroubra would probably be 30min on a bike?

You'd find yourself right at home in Coogee - heaps of folks from the UK find themselves living there it seems. Beautiful spot, and the Coogee - Bondi jogging path is something you'd fall in love with. It's also very close to Westfield Bondi Junction which has some great shopping.

Coogee, Maroubra, Maroubra Junction are good options for somewhere to live.
Maroubra is about 4 km to Long Bay and has only 1 small hill, an easy ride.
Coogee is about 7km. These 3 suburbs have lots of share accomodation on offer.
The public transport is good except for late at night, when you might have 30 mins or longer between buses ( I work shifts in the next suburb and finish at 11pm once a week, and catch a bus home )
Hope the move goes well!

I agree Coogee is a good place- about 25min by bike to Central station, and there are pleanty of bus services (for rainy days). There are some to central, circular quay or other beaches. Coogee is a popular nightlife spot with the Coogee Hotel always being full of locals and non locals alike. Or, it is not far from Sydney CBD which has good nightlife options.

It isn't cheap, as the Coogee lifestyle has really become popular.

I'd also recommend glebe or annendale which are close to the city (good for biking), and have a good safe vibe and easy access to restaruants and bars.
