We are panning to stay around Carcassonne from mid July. We don't want to drive. Is there a small town with rail or bus links to travel about?We have looked at a lovely rental in Caunes but I don't think there are any direct rail/ bus links from there.

Must it be a holiday rental arrangement?
There are two or three Logis-de France within walking distance of La Cité. Onec you get out a bit in to the country public transport can be quite sparse.

Carcassone is on the line Narbonne-Toulouse.
The map is on : http://www.entreprise-sncf.com/nos_lignes/nos_lignes.html Then select a place along this line and check on the SNCF website what trains there might be from the place you have selected. http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/ The SNCF runs also bus connections.

Hi! If you dont want to drive the best way is to stay in Carcassonne...But after the visit of the "cité" what to do?
There are many places near Carcassonne( Lagrasse, Minerve and old Cathars casttles) but you must drive...Take care of the Corbieres wines, its very fine...
