Hamburg Hamburg ferries to Denmark ??
Posted: Sat February 9, 2008 10:35 PM UTC
I would like to know if there are ferry boats going to Denmark from Hamburg and if yes, which line and how long would it take ? I read that a train ride to
Denmark costs about 80 Euros, but are there no reductions for foreign students??
Is there a cheaper option ?

Thank you!!

The ferries depart from Puttgarden and arrive in Rodbyhavn. The trip takes about 40 minutes. Puttgarden is 150 km. northeast of Hamburg on E-47 autobahn.

Normal price for the Hamburg Kobenhavn train is indeed 77,20. However you can save a lot of money if:
- You book in advance
- Make a return trip including a weekend.

Go to www.bahn.de and look up the times for the day you wish to travel. You will be shown prices available. The cheapest is 29,- but this is limited and sells out fast.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Hamburg
To: Copenhagen

Normal ticket is EUR 77,20.
Specials are available from EUR 29,00.

The ICE trains on this route make a part of the trip on board of a ferry. Also a quite luxurious train.

There are no discounts for domestic students either.

No. Hamburg is a North Sea port. Copenhagen is at the Baltic Sea.

If you are considering taking the ICE train which makes the ferry crossing from Puttgarten to Roedby it would be a good idea to book early if you can. The train is only four carriages long to enable it to be driven onto the ferry. It would fill up quickly during busy times.

Thank you all. I would need to know if ferry crossings are expensive, are they included in the ticket price ??
And do I need to be a German citizen to get this 29 Euro offer ?? Because I´m from Austria.
Kind regards!

If you go by train or bus the ferry is included.

No.

But I'm not sure if we should not make an exception in this case.

haha you are funny!! :)
But the thing is that I would take a ferry to stand on deck and enjoy the sea.
If I am in a train, I figure that should be less exciting...sitting inside ??

If you decide to go on the ICE train that travels between Germany and Denmark this is what to expect.

The train arrives at the dock and then after a short time drives straight into the cargo hold of the ferry. On the day of our crossing there was a tourist bus and trucks beside and behind our train. You are then able to get off if you wish to and use the facilities of the ferry - restaurant, lounges, duty free shop, toilets etc. The crossing takes 45mins. I think an announcement is made asking people to return to their cars, buses trains etc.

The train then drives off the other end of the ferry and you are in Denmark!

Thank you.
Am I getting you right that the passage, even from Puttgarden to Rodby, does not last longer than 45 minutes but costs more than 50 Euros one-way ?? That's the price I found out on the website.

Kind regards

Why bother with the ferry prices as long as you don't want to go by car?
The ferry Puttgarden to Rodby is included in the train ticket. Even with the EUR 29,00 special.

But before you can sleep bad:
pedestrian is EUR 4,00
bicycle incl. driver is EUR 12,00

The ICE train service is the fastest most direct way to get to Copenhagen.
My understanding is that there are two services per day. ICE33 departs Hamburg 09.28 and ICE37 departs Hamburg 17.28. The total trip time takes approximately 5hrs, including the 45 minute ferry crossing on the Scandlines ferry.

The ticket is all inclusive with the ferry charge included in the ticket price.
If you are able to secure a 29 Euro ticket I would snap that up as it would be great value.

As I explained before, you are able to explore the ship during the crossing. I did the trip on a very misty day so there were no views to speak of.
