Anything new occurring in the past few weeks on the garbage situation?Also is it in one area or throughout the city walking areas?Gene

Friends living there tell me that it is getting a little bit better, but really slowly, probably the most popular walking areas are free but I do not think the city in these conditions is something nice to see.

I can vouch for that. I was there last June and it was revolting then, so I would hate to see what it looks like now. Just how badly do you want to see Naples? If you are determined to go there then you will put up with the filth but if it is not high on your list of must see places then save time for something better and give it a miss.

I'm from Salerno ,a town on the sea at 50 km from Naples.
My town is one of the cleanest city in the area but unfortunately turists only know naples and think campania is naples.
In napolitan area the situation is not good yet but I assure you that here we have not had such problems at all, our municipality provides for rubbish and it is a clean city. .Salerno is 40 Km from the Greek temples of paestum,5 min drive from the Amalfi coast, with its breathbreaking scenary ( Amalfi,Positano,ravello,the Wagner garden...), 30 min. drive from Pompei,Herculanum.
There are bus and boat connections many times a week from Salerno's harbour.
