Usa Question about USA / Canada Travel from Australia
Posted: Sat February 9, 2008 06:38 AM UTC
I have a flight booked from here in Australia to the USA for April 16th. It's a return flight due back on the 15th of June. The trip at the moment is on a regular Visa waiver and I probably only have about $5000 with me to make it.. ( which is plenty as I know a lot of people in the US who will take care of me while I'm there for food, lodging etc..) It's a holiday so I don't plan to work on the trip legally or otherwise. I also have friends in Canada and wouldn't mind crossing into there also to see them. What would I need to do to be able to do that and is there any Visa or anything I have to apply for?

Secondly I'd like to spend as much time as possible overseas as I can.. Is there a legal way of not taking my plane home in June as planned but instead going over to Canada and taking a new flight back to Australia which I pay for when I'm there whenever the time is up? How long can I stay in Canada without having to go home? Anyway if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I don't really know any of the rules. Cheers.

Hi - I gather you live in Australia.
You had better get in touch with the Canada and USA consulates and find out all the ins and outs of this. Things change from time to time and things are different for people from different countries.
You don't want to not even make it out of the airport and just be shipped back to Australia. Or, be black listed from future travel.
In a case like this go to the source and get the exact info.

Hi,

You have posted in the Usa forum. Usa is part of Palau. Can I kindly suggest you post in the USA (United States) Forum so more people will see you question. That way you will get more information for your travels.

Have a great time!

By the way, over staying your visa or violating its guidelines will get you locked up. Look here:

Just remember, you can always apply for a Visa rather than a Visa Waiver.

As long as the airline allows you to change your ticket you should not have any problems. Most countries frown on you staying longer then your visa allows. Here is a link to information on coming into Canada. http://geo.international.gc.ca/asia/australia/visa/visasimm-en.asp

Good luck to you.

The above advice I agree with. However, you mention bringing $5000 with you. I don't think that is a good idea. Take your $5000 and deposit in a local bank and get a Visa or Mastercard ATM card. Then you can withdraw cash at a ATM anywhere along your route. I am not telling you that it is dangerous here in the USA, but things do Happen. Minimize your exposure. If they ask at the border, have a bank statement to show them that you indeed have the money to stay here. DO NOT buy prepaid credit cards or travelers checks. Those are a rip off.

Being on the USA Visa waiver program, you can freely pass back and forth between USA, Mexico and Canada as many times as you wish. However, the TOTAL stay in any combination of the three cannot pass the alloted time.
