Hey, just wanted to see if anyone lives or has been to cabarete that can tell me what the crime is like there? I was thinking of buying a vacation home. Thanks!

Hi, the crime rate in Cabarete is very low compared to other regions of D.R. I've been to every bar and club in town and have never been bothered by anybody (I lived there for 2 years). Of course it's always wise to leave your passport and travelers checks in the hotel safe and not to take valuables to the beach with you and leaved stuff unattended. When you use public transportation, make sure you pay the REAL local rates and not the fantasy prices they want from tourists because those compradores on the Guaguas are thieves.

Hi Spete 123, I've just come back from a fortnight there, I've heard that the villas can be susceptible to robberies, sometimes armed. You will probably need to consider your own security, many villa owners employ guards or as I noticed when going to Encuentro for early morning surfing where they seem to have quite a few villas, a big nasty looking dog or three! We were advised that if you are thinking of getting a property you are far better off going for a managed established condo complex with its own security, its also more difficult for a criminal if the apartments on the first floor or higher! We also read of an armed robbery in Cabarete where some tourists were stopped in their car and threatened with machetes. Overall though we were very impressed with the friendliness and honesty of all the locals there including the taxi drivers, altogether a very postive experience!

I've been there. It's a very cute touristy town. I can't imagine there being much crime there.
