| Tallinn | Yarn Stores Posted: Sat February 9, 2008 02:11 AM UTC
One day in Tallinn planned -- Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas on Wednesday, August 6. My wife -- a master knitter -- will certainly want to take the time during our walking to see what Tallinn has to offer in the way of wool. Any suggestions of shops or neighborhoods?

I don't know much about sewing, but there is a chain of fabrics shops here called Abakhan Fabrics and I checked their website and they have wool yarn. Hope that helps and here is their website (it's in English too). Look under Products / Knitting Yarn.

I remember seeing rows of little shops in the cobbled lanes, (near the flower market , quite close to Town Hall Square - sorry that is the best I can do on location).
Many were selling knitted garments in a thick, double-ply wool - absolutely beautiful, lovely colours, traditional patterns and warm enough for east European winters. A lot were aimed at tourists but someone in our group bought a jumper for a grandchild and what looked like several kilos of wool as well.

If you're looking for pre-made items like sweaters and socks, etc, then yeah, just inside the Viru gates of the Old Town (Vanalinn) is a row of old ladies selling their wares. Throughout the Old Town you'll find shops selling woolen items. I understood your original post to mean your wife wanted wool for sewing herself, but there are plenty of shops in Old Town for wool clothes. You need not waste time to venture out of that area, since you'll be in town for 1 day.

Yes - that is true - mostly ready knitted garments on sale there. But the woman I was with also bought enough wool in skeins/hanks/balls/ - call it what you will to knit up clothes herself.

(Just bookmarking...)
(I have been trying to find good-quality wool yarn in Riga, without much luck (they mainly seemed to sell acrylics etc, which puzzled me a bit, since there are lovely knitted wool mittens for sale everywhere in Latvia (and in Estonia too - anyway, might go to Tallinn soon so hoping to find some nice wool there:o)) But as someone said before, there are lots of shops in the old town where she can see all sorts of pretty knitted stuff - mittens, scarves, sweaters etc (not all sweaters are hand-knitted though...)
