There is a hiking trail running from Pegazzano on the western edge of La Spezia to Biassa, past Monte Fraschi and down into Riomaggiore. I haven't done this hike so I can't vouch for its scenery.

I haven't done the walk either, but I know that someone asked about this before and at that time, I found a map of all the walking trails in the "Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre", which I recall showing that dnw is right that you can walk most of the way (I don't know how far out of La Spezia you'll have to get).

Look at http://www.parconazionale5terre.it/sentieri_e_trekking_2.asp?id_lingue=2 for a list of the walking trails in the park, and maybe you'll find what you want...you might also do a search here for "hiking" in Italy (or in "Liguria" if you get too many hits) in the last year and see what you get...

Undoubtedly it is possible (check with the La Spezia tourist office), but you're much better off taking the train to Riomaggiore (most likely less than EUR 1) and hiking on the "Via Del'Amore" to Manarola or beyond to Corniglia or Vernazza. The views are gorgeous, though the trail can be quite crowded, depending on when you go.

Enjoy your trip!
