Weather in June Posted: Fri February 8, 2008 10:33 AM UTC
I am planning a 3 week trip this summer to the Carcassonne area. We found a great place but it is only available during the month of June. As we had rather disappointing weather last summer, we want to be "guaranteed" of nice weather this time. Actually this is, apart from the region itself, one of the reasons to drive down south so far. Although the statistics on the various weather sites are quite OK for the month of June, I would like to be sure that June is not just too early for nice weather in the Languedoc-Roussillon. Of course nothing is so unpredictable as the weather, but can anyone tell me his/her experiences on the weather in June.
Thanks!

We have a family saying about inclement, unpredictable weather and particularly summer weather that turns into winter in half an hour - Very Languedocian!
It is always a bit of a risk staying close to the foothills of a mountain range - whatever the month. I think if you really do want some better weather this year I would recommend going on down to the coast. Our favourite in that area is at Collioure. We had lovely weather ther last March(!) but on the way abandoned a visit to Carcassonne because of the weather ... We are going again in April. Collioure is almost close enough for a day visit to Carcassonne, and certainly to Perpignan. The adjacent beach area at St Cyprien Plage and Argeles sur Mer are also very nice. There is plenty to do in the area - Collioure even has its own Chateau right on the harbour.

No one can guarantee good weather . . . even the weatherman. LOL
We've visited Carcassonne in June a few times and once had rain but still wandered the castle. It could get hot too. We just pack layers to wear and umbrellas in case of rain and enjoy the sights no matter the weather.
The suggestion above for Collioure is another excellent idea. We have driven to Carcassonne from Perpignan as a day trip. Collioure is charming with beaches, colorful fishing boats, delightful harbors and the aforementioned chateau. There are artists on the shore and lots of cafes above the beach. The area is lovely for walks and drives and the beach between Canet-Plage and St. Cyprien-Plage is our favorite beach in France. There is also free parking at the road and a nature reserve on the lake opposite the ocean. It's a very family-friendly area too. If you are interested in Cathar history, you could do at least part of the Cathar Trail while in the Collioure (or Carcassonne) area.
I don't think I'd be afraid of June in Carcassonne. The weather shouldn't be bad for more than a few days at worst. Generally, it's a lovely month.

Last June me and my family visited Carcassonne and we had a windy/rainy day. The winds were strong, not too strong, but strong enough to be annoying since the dust would get in your eyes etc. It also rained a bit.
The next day, in Toulouse, 45minutes north, it was sunny and warm...
The beaches can also be a bit cold at the end of summer...
for good beach weather go to the Cote d'Azur, but if that's too touristy for you, then I would recommend the beach towns near the Spanish border.

Thanks everybody. We will stick to the original plan. A day on the coast could be nice, but is not exactly the purpose of our trip. We are planning to explore the Carcassonne area and want to be able to travel both to Toulouse and Figueras (Spain) and everything in between, without too much effort. And normally, the weather shouldn't be too bad, when you have 3 weeks.
