Re: places to visit !! Posted: Fri February 8, 2008 09:38 AM UTC
Windermere is the hub of the lake District and an excellent centre for outdoor activities of all kinds, particularly water based hobbies on it's very long Lake. It is also one of the liveliest of places to spend a few days in winter.
You are absolutely right about there being so much to see and it is a large area - 885 square miles.
So in a weekend you will do little more than scratch the surface. I suggest that you contact the Information Office in Windermere for advice about what out-door activities will actually be available - I am thinking about para-gliding types of thing - at that time of year.
The weather influences what you may choose to do on a daily basis and a day that starts fine and clear can change very suddenly making the hillside, mountain path or water dangerous places to be.
So do not underestimate the potential for risk and, if planning a trek away from "civilisation", check with the Lakes Weather Centre on 0870 055 0575 and follow the advice about suitable footwear and clothing, and carrying with you good maps and "emergency" rations etc..
There is no shortage of accommodation and lots of cottages and hostels. So early in the year you should not have any problem finding a suitable one. The lakes are a year-round destination for walkers and climbers, as well as for people just getting away to relax and read, enjoy the beauty of the area and take a gentle stroll to the village pub now and then.
You have obviously started to do some research but you may find the additional information on the links below useful:-
