Garmisch-Partenkirchen Cable Car
Posted: Wed February 6, 2008 01:34 PM UTC
Planing a visit to GP late March.
I would like to visit a mountain top aroung GP, with a local cable car /(or train):

Maximum time spent: 1,5-2 hours.
I'm not interesting in any winter sports, only interested for nice views -taking pictures etc.

Any suggestions?

Hi - I'd recommend going to Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. We were there mid-May and it was freezing - about 1 degree (C) and windy - snow all around! It was great! Check out http://www.zugspitze.de/zugspitze/index_en.php.

The Zugspitze was amazing, the ride will cost you 43 euro (2004) make sure if you go up you don't go to near the end of the day or you won't have anytime to chill up there!! a cheaper alternative although it was closed when I tried to do it in 2004 is to go up the austrian side near Ehrwald/Obermoos I think it was about 30 euro from there.

It's a bit too long IMO and beside that I think it's not the best option for you. When you're on top of that mountain you can't see it, right?

I personally would go to the Wank. The gondola up there takes 20 minutes from Partenkirchen. It's a walking/hiking mountain, not a ski mountain anymore. Elevation is much lower than the Zugspitze, but it will provide fantastic views of the valley AND the mountains (Zugspitze). The gondola runs 21 - 30 March 2008.
