| Bergen | thoughts please! Posted: Wed February 6, 2008 06:21 AM UTC
I'm thinking of 2-3 day trip to Bergen about 5-6 April.
Only been to Norway once before - overnight business trip to Oslo - so knowledge limited. My research on VT makes me think Bergen would be good to visit. I don't expect good weather in early April - just places to see & things to do. Waht do you think? Good idea or (for example) wrong time of year? Any thoughts on accomodation? I like small friendly places, but I'm OK with budget hotel chains as well. Not so keen on "business" type chains (seen too many of them!) |

Bergen is *always* a good place to visit! (In my totally unbiased opinion.. ;o)
Average temperature in Bergen in April is around 5-6C, it's not the best time of the year for a visit (that would be May-June) but it's not bad either -at least it's spring.. :o) Museums etc are open all year, but your options for fjord tours are more limited in April (many start running in May) - the Norway in a Nutshell runs all year, though. (And is highly recommended if you want to see some of the fjords!) www.norwaynutshell.com For accommodation, try www.visitbergen.com - lots of info there.

If you want a medium waterfront hotel, try the "Clarion Admiral". It's OK, but average...
If you want more atmosphere with a 5-10 minute walk down to the centre, try a small hotel like the "Hotel Park Pension". It's next to the university and the preferred place for visiting professors.

Park Pension - that's the one near Realfagbygget, isn't it? (With "fake windows" painted on one of the walls...:o) - that one looks really nice, and is definitely worth checking out! I'm not too impressed by Admiral - we stayed there...hmm 2 years ago? and our room was amazingly stuffy and damp - we might have been unlucky with our room, of course. The location is quite excellent, though.

Yes, near Realfagbygget. I know people that have been happy to stay both places. But you are probably right too with the Admiral. Parts of the hotel are old and maybe in need of renovation?
There is also the "Orion" on the other side of the harbour near the Håkons Hall. It's also a nice budget hotel
