| Charlotte | Charlotte to Dallas, Texas Posted: Sun February 3, 2008 09:31 PM UTC
Would be grateful if any locals or fellow travellers could recommend various forms of transport between Charlotte NC and Dallas Tx. Timescale is not important, price is more so, but so is safety!
Train seems complicated, i.e via New Orleans, San Antonio etc. Are Greyhounds generally considered safe? Thanks |

Airtran at about $95 -105 US. Probably cheaper than the Bus, but the bus is as safe as "National Express" in the UK. Forget about a Train in the US unless there happens to be one the exact way you want to go. But today flying on many routes is obviously faster, safe, and cheaper than any other way to travel. You should understand that here in the "Colonies" distances can be greater than you realize. From Charlotte to Dallas is about 1100 miles and would be the better part of 2 days of "torture" on a bus.

100% agreement...unless you WANT to travel by train or bus, take a plane. Also check Southwest Airlines (www.southwest.com), but they might not fly out of Charlotte...but do check this and other airlines as the cheapest fare can even be on a legacy airline...

Thank you both - I am familiar with long distances, including bus travel as I have lived in Argentina and spent two days on a very dilapidated bus last year! Was trying to avoid flying, but that may be the best way.

Greyhound busses are perfectly safe. Within the bus stations are perfectly safe. HOWEVER, the only Americans who ride busses for any length are those too down and out to own a car. Thus, although you'll be completely safe, you'll travel with people near the bottom of the social-economic scale. Also, a lot of bus stations are at or near the less-than-desirable parts of the city they are in. If you exit the bus station, make certain you know where to go and where you DON'T want to go. This can vary tremendously from station to station, so get a recent guidebook with candid info on that topic.

The Greyhound bus from Charlotte to Dallas would definitely be the cheapest way to go. It is reasonably comfortable and perfectly safe. It is true that many poor people ride the bus, but they are definitely not the only ones to do so. I occasionally take the bus simply because it offers a travel adventure that one can get no other way. If the journey is as important to you as the destination, the bus can be a very interesting experience. You will see lots of the countryside that you cannot view from an airplane and you just might meet some new friends along the way.
