Izmir is a really historical place and there are lots of great museums and archaeology - if that's your thing :-)
Enjoy your honeymoon!

We were there 2 years back and we went to Balcova (30-40 minutes ride from main bus terminal) and take the cable car ride up the mountain to see the full view of the whole city, then we went to dine at the foodcourt in Agora shopping mall, the foodcourt has a lovely view of the sea.
Take a ride at one of the phaetons at the famous Kordon district (around the famous clock tower). or take a historical walk along Oteller street in Basmane. Go to the famous bazaar (kemeralti), watch the sunset at the port lined with Cafes (historic Pasaport Quay) overlooking the bay. There are lots of things to see and do in Izmir, but since it's only a day, take a pick. Enjoy your trip!

BTW, you said security? Izmir is safe as is with the rest of Turkey.

I wish you get older on the same bed and pillow.
What I dont like on cruise tours that they stay at very port for a short time. your tour agency sold you only a ship not history, not wondering the beauties of Izmir and surroundings. You will miss Ephesus, Grave and Church of St John Bergamon, cave of 7 Sleepers and a dog,Sardes, Pamukkale (Hierapolis)ect, ect. You will miss to visit Home of Virgin Mary. Now some Joke if you pleae :)) All Turkish citizens are members of a security system. Your ship is more insecure.

Teermal (above) suddenly reminded me of something that oyu could do in Izmir, right at the main Izmir city, particularly in Balcova, they're famous for thermal spring. A nice honeymoon thermal bath would be a romantic idea. ;)
Try looking at this one http://www.balcovatermal.com/ Ephesus/Selcuk as everyone says would also be a nice excursion trip - about 1 & half hours from Izmir city, or the 2-hour trip to the ancient city of Pergamum. Enjoy your time and best wishes!

Viajera, you have received alot of advice about Beautiful Izmir from people, who like myself, obviously love the place. I am just back here in Ireland after spending two brilliant weeks there.
Don't forget to take the ferryboat across to Karsiyaka, you can board at Konak, pasaport and Alsancak. Walk up the main shopping street there called Carsi and you might pick up a bargain. If you hire a car you could take the road towards Canakkale and turn left when you see the sign for Yeni Foca. There is a very nice coastal route past Yeni Foca to Eski Foca which is a fantastic little seaside town with lots of old Greek houses. Enjoy your honeymoon in THE best country.
