I will be visiting Bangkok soon and would like to also go to the Roi Et area (Kaset Wisai). I am thinking of renting a car and driving. Is this difficult to do? Can any one give me directions?

Cannot help you in particular in relation to Roi Et, however we hired and I drove a car from Nong KHai through Issan to Khorat including through Kalasin and Surin in March 07, driving was not a problem but we drive on the left hand side of the road at home so that was not an issue to me. We returned the car in Khorat, as planned, and caught a bus back to Bangkok, having seen the Bangkok traffic I am glad that we planned our trip that way. Road signs were generally in both Thai script and English, except for a stretch North of Kalasin where we followed the direction required and eventually confirmed we were still heading in the right direction. We used Budget as it provided a one way drop off without fee penalty, booked it on the net through Thailand in advance of leaving home.

if u have at least driven in the middle east, asia...you'll might have a bit of difficulty driving here as there's no such thing as one universal spelling in thailand for roads / directions...
but hey, why not - getting lost is part of traveling... renting is the easy part. driving? you can tell us when you return. buckle up.
