HELP, I want to learn slovene!
Posted: Mon September 22, 2003 11:57 AM UTC
Hi, I am a 24 year old girl from the Netherlands and I would like to come to Slovenia next year to finally learn the language. I have Slovene roots. I also would like to stay there, rent a room or something. Can anybody help me with this? Maybe give me some information about how to rent a room, or where to learn the language.
Thanks!!! Danaja

Dober dan Danaja! I also have SLO roots, and family that still lives there. So it was imortant for me to learn the language. Well, since I live in the states it's been hard. There is only one person here that teaches it, so I've also picked up "colloquial Slovene", from Amazon.com.
Since you live closer to SLO, I reccomend staying there for a while and taking a class in Ljublijana.
As for where to stay, I reccomend the Lonely Planet book (also available at Amazon.com) They have great info on farm houses, hotels, hostiles, etc.
Let me know if I can help in any way!
SreCno pot!
V.

Tanks for the info. Say? Did this colloquial Slovene work out for you? I guess it is always better to learn it in the country of interest, but I also wanted to prepare myself before going there. So, can you recommend it?

I agree, there is not much use for it in other countries. However, I say invest the money and time in the Colloqueal book and classes if you can.
This will only help to preserve our native language. If you ever intend to be in SLO for a period of time, or at all in smaller towns, it WILL come in handy.
Mir.

Danaja, there are some language schools that offer Slovene courses. I recommend you Center za tuje jezike. Have a look at their home page
http://www.ctj.si
For a room have a look at

I wish you all the best.

Teaches you some basics on the web and has sound clips to listen too. If you know more, good luck!
