| Breda | Breda or Bergen op Zoom? where to stay? Posted: Wed January 30, 2008 06:42 AM UTC
good morning VTers :)
I'll be visiting Bergen Op Zoom for a week soon and I really had a hard time finding anything useful about it. I have few questions and I hope you guys help me out here. - Is Breda the closest city to BoZ? and how far is it? - if yes, will it be easy to stay in Breda and go to work every morning in BoZ, or is it going to be a tiring? - what is the best option for me regarding airports close to Bergen op Zoom? ------ BoZ questions: is there any fast food, major hotels, or cinmas there? 1st time in netherland... And thanks in advance everyone :) |

I'm not sure what you mean here by "city", since BoZ itself has city status! But it takes 33 minutes to get there by train from Breda, changing in Roosendaal. The closest airport is at Antwerp in Belgium, the next closest would be Rotterdam, but you may well need to fly to Amsterdam-Schiphol anyway, which has good rail connections, it takes 1h43 from there to BoZ, either direct or changing at Roosendaal (direct train starts at Amsterdam Centraal stopping at Schiphol Airport, Leiden Centraal, Den Haag HS, Rotterdam Centraal, Dordrecht, Roosendaal - 13m - Bergen op Zoom, Kruiningen-Yerseke, Goes, Middelburg, Vlissingen). hi, I saw your email but hadn't replied yet. So I'll reply here.
Bergen-op-Zoom is a wonderful town, definitely lucky that you will be there for a longer time. Breda is great too, btw... a bit larger than BOZ. Airports: once you enter the country, take it with public transport from there. You will find general info about The Netherlands helpful too: www.ns.nl for train travel www.9292ov.nl for all public transportation travel. For a translation of www.9292ov.nl see http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1aa687/ and I have lots of general info on The Netherlands on my NL page. Bergen-op-Zoom is a medium city. Apart from my own Bergen-op-Zoom page, which probably only deals with touristic info, you can have a look at: www.bergenopzoom.nu Choose 'Uitgaan/Overnachten' for Culture, Theatre, Hotels (Overnachten), Restaurants (Horeca), etc. Cinema in Bergen-op-Zoom: http://www.cinemaparadiso.nl/ Fastfood: McDonalds, Zuivelstraat 3, BOZ (City center) Cafetaria "t Vijfde Kastanjelaan 72 4621 HH Bergen op Zoom Tel: 0164-245251 Cafetaria De toekomst Kortemeestraat 2 4611 TM Bergen op Zoom Tel: 0164-235131 New York Pizza Steenbergsestraat 39 4611 TD Bergen op Zoom Volkan Shoarma Potterstraat 45 4611 NH Bergen op Zoom Tel: 0164-257717

If you have to work at Bergen op Zoom, you could stay there in a hotel as well.
These are the closest to the bergen op Zoom train station: Old Dutch, Hotel Grand Café, Stationsstraat 29-31 4611CB Bergen op Zoom Mercure de Draak Hotel, Grote Markt 36-38 4611NT Bergen op Zoom De Bourgondiër, Grote Markt 2 4611NR Bergen op Zoom I assume you fly international; Schiphol Airport Amsterdam is the obvious choice. Excellent train connection from there to Bergen op Zoom. For cinema's, more entertainment and 900+ bars go to Breda. PJ

wooow...you guys are the best. I wasn't expecting such fast and detailed replies since the forum was a bit dead.
I have a totally different and clearer idea now. what about the weather, will it still be cold in mid Feb? too cold?

Depends on what you are used to. It can rain or freeze. Or not.
Not much over 10 degrees Celsius, if at all. 16-24 February is a school holiday in that region. So you'll see more families and kids about.

The weather is interesting right now.
After 2 wet weeks we went down to night frost last night and expending a storm with mild wet ocean air. So, bring a warm raincoat that can stand some wind. PJ

Are you looking for an appartment for 2 months with some basics, like kitchen etc?
Here's one example for 750 Euro per month: http://www.rotsvast.nl/default.asp?surl=http://www I have no idea of your budget. You could book a hotel room or holiday bungalow, but that is far more expensive than renting a furnished appartment on a monthly base via a broker or from a private person. PJ

Honestly, I am going with my two friends and we are looking for an apartment only for two months (July and August). Yes, some basics are welcome. We really want to rent something in Breda. The camping is too far from town. As far as the budget is concerned, I don't know how it works in Holland. We would like to split the price of renting between all of us. For eg. if the apartment costs 750 euros, we would like to pay 250 euros per person. Is it possible?

When you rent, there is a contract or written agreement involved, and therefore usually there is only one that hires. You can split the cost amongst yourselves but most probably you will not all be the contractees, so to speak.
