many postings and website about Luang Prabang suggest visiting waterfalls and going for a swim or going in the water on the back of an elephant!. Is this safe? Our travel doc warned of yucky parasites in Mekong River and waterways that feed into it. Anyone know anything about this?

Well, I've been swimming at the taller Khuang Si waterfall yearly since 2001 and haven't contracted anything yet. Still there's a huge difference between the streams that feed into Khouangsi and swimming in the Mekong which I would consider a huge toilet pipe from China.

I've had no problems swimming in the Mekong or it's tributaries. Whilst the mekong is a waste disposal unit for lots of countries, it is also a huge river and has many fresh water supplies entering it, so I think it's pretty safe on the whole.
I met a guy in the 4000 islands, in the south of laos, who was appalled that we had been swimming in the 'dirty' river. What he hadn't realised was that he had been showering in river water every day - most guesthouses pump river water into their storage tanks there. I did hear of one type of parasite which was occasionally present during the rainy season. it's probably best to ask locally as they will know best. happy travels :-)
