Naples naples italy--Having second thoughts
Posted: Mon January 28, 2008 10:48 PM UTC
OK-People on this site have convinced us that crime is really not a big probnlem in Naples or no worse than other cities and one just has to be careful.
Now comes the next latest news which I thought was over with and that is garbage that stinks. Is this just in a few areas or does it permeate the city.
Would be great if somene who lives there could respond rather than a guess or opinion from an outsider.Thanks-Gene

Question is - why are you so determined to see Naples when there are so many unquestionably wonderful and beautiful places nearby? Even without the traffic and the crime and the garbage and the kamikazee drivers (did anybody mention those), it can't possibly compare with Pompeii, Capri, Positano, Sorrento or Ravello. Just go to the Mall and get a tee-shirt made with 'I survived Naples' on it.
The garbage strike has been going on for years. The local Maffia controls the dumps and the trash collection business and is holding the city up to ransom.

It would indeed be great if someone who lives there replied, but at least I'm in Europe.

The rubbish thing has been going on for years, because control of landfill sites lies with the criminal fraternities and many are full anyway, but the Army has been clearing rubbish from the streets since the beginning of this month. This does not mean, of course, that there will not still be problems when you visit (or new ones). I will be able to provide a more up-to-date opinion in a couple of weeks, after my visit to Sorrento & area.

It seems to me that you may have problems enjoying Naples if you are so concerned about its problems, real or perceived. As suggested above, why not stay elsewhere in the vicinity (e.g. Sorrento) and make day trips to Naples if you want to visit the museums etc?

Thank you for your thoughts- We have been to the area many times but never naples which is why I asked. Seems the advice is good to just go there on a day trip--thanks-Gene

My apologies! I guess my previous post was a bit acidic. We were there several years ago - long before the trash strike. We turned on our heels and got out of town after 15 minutes. It was just too much of a culture shock after a couple of weeks in Amalfi, Tuscany etc.
Go with an open mind and enjoy - let us know how you got on when you get back.
