Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Sydney Airlines
Posted: Mon January 28, 2008 06:11 PM UTC
Hi all, we're hoping to visit Sydney in September for a wedding and I'm wondering about who to fly with. Most of the major airlines appear to be around the £800-£900 mark so I'd like to book it based on good service, good legroom etc... Does anyone have any feedback on flights from the UK to Sydney (good or bad)?
Thanks
BlueBeth

Hi,
I'd go with either British Airways (London via Singapore - Sydney)
or Qantas, which is also provides good service and safety as well as leg room.

for me its Singapore airlines. They have a 3-3-3 seat config and 32 inch seat pitch. Google seatguru. They have all this info. I've flown with Emirates as well. Good seat pitch ( 34 in.) but 3-4-3 seat config. Very squeezy.

With all of the airlines you've got a stop over somewhere. We flew with Emirates and found service etc great, but seats were a bit cramped for me - I'm nearly 6 feet tall. QANTAS is also very good, but inflight service I'd say Emirates is better than QANTAS. Cathay Pacific is also very good and may be a bit quicker as they tend to fly the polar route London - Hong Kong. CP was also a bit cramped too.

If you can afford it, why not go business class?

I'll vote with the Singapore Airlines suggestion, followed by Emirates and Qantas as a last resort. Singapore Airlines is extremely comfortable and the service is friendly and really professiional. Also the food is superb as it is on Emirates. It's just that Singapore Airlines has a touch of class that none of the others seem to have. There is one thing about Emirates that I like better than the others and that is that the flight is done in 3 x 7-8hr hops i.e. London/Dubai/Singapore Sydney Thus you come down twice and even though it may not be for long, at least it gives you time to give your legsa a good stretch and if you're lucky time enough to have a good look around the transit lounge in Dubai which is really nice. The others all have a 12-13hr stretch from London to Singapore and unless you are a really good plane-sleeper it can be a real drag.

My vote goes to Singapore too. If they fly to wherever it is we want to go we will choose them before any other airline.

Another vote for Singapore Airlines.

Did not like my Emirates flight - bad service, bad seat. But you still get airmiles with Emirates, and this is great. For me in New Zealand this means that I get a free return flight to Australia for every flight to Europe. Air NZ as a member of the Star Alliance (also Singapore Airlines) has invented airmile dollars, and this is a bad deal. For our last flight to Europe we got only 200 airmile NZ$, and with this you only get a short-distance flight within NZ, and only if you book it well in advance. The real airmiles redemptions are only calculated on the miles and not on the ticket price in the moment of booking.

I have travelled to the UK with both Malaysian and Cathay..I would go Cathay any time...but I didnt like Malaysian..We felt really squished in, never got the food we requested and overall had a bad trip. Cathay staff couldnt have been nicer, and a stopover in hong Kong was great!

Thanks so much for all your feedback guys. I really appreciate it, we went on skytrax and it seemed to confirm everything you've all said about Singapore.

Been 8 years since I flew to London, but we went over to Europe with KLM, brilliant service, and back with Olympic. Olympic were good, nice food, but once they served the meals, the flight crew were nowhere to be found. Really only a matter of getting your drinks yourself.

I found Air Japan was excellent, there's good service, good entertainment (also very important) and (I don't know how true this is in reality, but on my flight) the Japanese passengers were exceptionally quiet. There was a lady with a baby in front of me and when the baby started crying, the lady said "Shhh" and the baby stopped.

Also, because it's not particularly well known for its London-Sydney service, the flight was quite empty. On my way to London, I had the whole row to myself, all the way from Sydney.

I didn't particularly like some of the food though.
