| Agadir | Heading for Agadir! Posted: Sun January 27, 2008 12:58 PM UTC
Going to Agadir in June for a week - staying at Riu Tikida Dunas. first time to
visit Morocco. First time going all -inclusive. Have read a few reviews on this hotel - all seem to be very positive! Are they too good to be true?? It looks like a nice place - I hope it meets all expectations ! What are the temperatures at that time of the year - I hope it is not unbearably hot. My travelling party consisting of 4, wanted something different - close to the beach, no hills for climbing and a new experience. What does one dor for money exchange - use the ATM when we get there ? Is this one of those countries where you have to leave their currency behind? I am excited but at the same time a little apprehensive about going to Morocco! I would appreciate any comments or advice. BD |

June is not the best moment for going in Agadir, and visiting marocco looks difficult because its not the best area in the country..Of course Essaouira and Tafraout are not so far, but thats all...

hi ,june will be quite hot in agadir.its a few years since i was there, just after 9/11 in fact. have been back several times but to marrakech.
there are lots of nice restraunts and shops. make sure you haggle when you buy. you could go to taradount for the day, this is called the mini marrakech. an interesting day trip. you may see the goats standing in the argan trees on the way. its such a funny sight. if you have time be sure to visit marrakech,an overnight stay would give you time to visit all the sights with time in the souks. it would give you a taster and tempt you to revisit. im sure you will have a great holiday, be sure to wear lots of sunscreen and you will be fine. laney

Hiya
I live in Agadir, and its glorious in June. The hotel is away from town, but you can walk along the beach into town, or get one of the numerous taxis from outside the hotel for about a £1. It will be hot in June - mid 80's but as the hotel is right on the beach, there is normally a sea breeze. Don't forget your sun cream. The Dirham is a closed currency, there is an bureau de change at the airport (fixed rates throughout Agadir) and numerous ATM's in town. Don't change more than you need, as you cannot take it out of the country again. Yes there are shops where you can haggle, but there are also fixed price shops - or better still visit a fixed price shop see what the right price is, then go to a little shop and enter the spirit and haggle. There are beach hawkers, and beggars, but a smile and no thank you and they will leave you alone. Cover up away from the beach (but not excessively, just remember you are in a Muslim country and if you treat the Moroccans with respect they will treat you likewise. Do explore the town and the other end of the beach, the Marina, the prom and the various cafes and restaurants. Sometimes unscrupulous reps will say, don't go out of the hotel after dark......balderdash, its only cos they want you to spend your money in their bar. Most of all, relax and enjoy yourselves.

Hello CharlieL...you mention that the currency is closed and one cannot take it out of the country. I was able to exchange some money at the local currency place here in Canada, to take with me on my trip to Agadir.
How can it be here, if it isn't allowed out of the country? Just wondering. Thanks, Joyce

Honestly, I have Moroccan money and I haven't left Canada yet. Even our chartered banks said that they could order it for me, if I wanted to buy some.
My friend who lives near Buffalo, New York in the US, has Moroccan money as well. She ordered her's from her bank. On the front/back of my bills, it says Bank al-Maghrib , then the demonination..100 Dirhams. On the other side is a picture of three men (on the 100 dirham bill), on the 200 dirham bill, it's a picture of 2 men. Buildings are also showing with the men's pictures. Although, no where on the money, does it say Morocco. Is there a chance that this is not Moroccan money? Strange, isn't it!! I better find out what's going on before I leave. Let's hope that all is well.

hi CharlieL,
Thanks for your comments on Agadir. Can you give an update on the works which are going on along the beach / promenade? Some people say it is very noisy and that it is directly in front of the Tikida Dunas hotel ! The noise wouldn't really bother me as long as it is not constant and very dusty. How much money (in your opinion) would one need for a week there especially when it is All Inclusive? I am wondering what sort of spending budget I should allow ! I've see some reports saying they had more than enough with about £200!! I know it may be a poor country - but to me that kind of a figure is a bit ridiculous!! Perhaps I am in for a shock!! Bdavitt
