Have a read of the attached, note the trademark section. You can see that the market for them in Australia is very competitive as the name is not protected as it is overseas.

I have seen them at markets but have not noted the price.

You will probably find that the $50 ugg boots are made of synthetic materialand are 'Made in China'. As mentioned previously, 'Ugg' is both a brand name and a generic term.

There are many ugg boots that sell for less than $50.
"Real" ugg boots are made from good quality sheepskin with the wool still attached on the inside. Check that it is real sheepskin both outside and in and that the shaping of it fits your foot. They ALWAYS stretch, so buy them a little tight.

Nothing to comment about ugg boots.

Restaurants - there are very few restaurants within walking distance to the F1 circuit, so you might be better off getting away from the area for eating. Lygon Street Carlton is almost wall to wall Italian. Greek - Lonsdale Street City, couple of good ones in Swan Street Richmond and closish to F1 is Stravos Tavern in Victoria Ave Albert Park.

The rose hotel in Bay street is a greek restaurant, not that far really to walk, but you might want to grab a taxi anyway. there is also a couple in Victoria Avenue Albert Park, and also Italian there too. That is definately within walking distance as I have done it a couple of times.

Can you please tell me where the Market Place is that you are speaking of for UGGS? Is that for shoes as well as boots and is it the real UGGS?
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Everyone is talking about the Queen Victoria Market. The last pair of ughboots I bought cost me about $100.00 so for $50, they wouldnt be of a good quality, nor 100% sheepskin

Oh and a side note, I dont think i have ever seen the "UGG" brand in Australia. I believe that this is only used for export. I could be wrong

I agree with Suzy, I never did see the actual "Ugg" brand while in Australia, however I did find it extremely ironic that when I returned to America, they hype the "Ugg" name as uniquely Australian. Sort of like Fosters, Outback Steakhouse, and that crap wine, YellowTail. All of which you would never find a real Australian enjoying, not even with a "Shrimp" on the Barbie.

As mentioned though, your best bet for this style of boot is in Queen Victoria Market, which is located directly north of the Melbourne CBD, and is a fairly close walk from Lygon Street (unless you are American, then it would be a $6 AUD cab ride).

The best suggestion is to take a tram from the F1 circuit to Lygon Street, enjoy some great Italian (my recommendations are on my travel page for Melbourne) and then walk over to QVM and grab some real Australian Uggs :)

Your wrong about the Ugg Boot and as your wrong about Fosters (unless your talking non victorians), the rest might pass.

That makes less sense than what I wrote.

If I could go back I would remove the "as".

You both are.

The Ugg boot was registered as a trademark by an Australian company that was brought by an American company that then registered the trademark in America and elsewhere. No Australian company can export the boots as Ugg's for fear of being sued I believe so there is no Australian export market overseas.

The original trademark registration in Australia was taken away by Australian courts for Australia as your not allowed to register a word that is in common use, ie you cannot register cat or dog for your own exclusive use (I am no lawyer so this may be an over simplication/or I could be wrong). I have seen Ugg's for sale in Melbourne and can remember (showing my age) when they went through a fashionable must have phase many moons ago. I can remember visiting a WA farmhouse that was claiming they had be making them for 50 years or some such high number.

I still do not see how I was wrong. I lived in Victoria and New South Wales for close to two years, and did not see a Fosters, nor a Ugg Branded Ugg Boot on a foot. I saw plenty of VB and off-brand boots though.

OK I apologise, I should not be telling you what you did see. That was rude of me.

I do see Ugg boots here, more so recently because of this post thread I guess and past associations. I own shares in Foster's and can see an advertising sign from my work window but I am well aware that the beer is not produced here and exported to the USA but rather produced somewhere else so I guess your not drinking an aussie beer over there.

It is not my purpose to upset anyone so will be more careful is responding in future.

I know the legal argument you are talking about regarding the branding of Ugg, however Im with Mark on this one. Coming from the age group who wears ugg boots (originally called Ugh Boots for a bit of trivia) I have never seen the brand Ugg in Australia, and seeing as though I have lived here for 29 years.....well.

As for Fosters, my father drinks it, not sure why as it tastes rubbish. But I understand where Mark is coming from, the average Aussie doesnt drink the stuff.

That anwswers the questions.

I do know that UGG is a US brand, so do not need to arguee much. Everybody loves those Australian boots that are sold and marketed as UGGs outside of the wonderful Australia.
