| Cairns | Reef Walking Posted: Sat January 26, 2008 11:03 AM UTC
Hi
I'll be travelling to Cairns in mid-Mar. I would like to know which island has reef walking activity? Also, my friend wishes to go skydiving, RnR rafting and ATV. Where can I find these activities in Cairns? Thank you. |

I don't think reef walking is allowed any more because of the damage it does to the coral. If you google 'cairns' you'll get a lot of websites with full info on tours available from there.

Thanks for the info. Since I can't swim, and I found out in Green Island there is an activity called Seawalker which allows you to walk in the water without knowing how to swim. Is it the only island that provide this kind of activity?

I'm not sure, my guess would be that other islands would do similar things. Green Island is a good resort, plenty of fish etc.

Hi yes Ive not heard of it being permitted on Australian reefs - but another issue is Ive heard of it being done amongst some islands somewhere and persons doing it had stepped off and gone down under getting caught under the reefs and drowning - so something to bear in mind that not only harmful to the reefs and coral but to the so called participants!
I dont know what ATV stands for or what RnR (usually means rest and relaxation - rafting?) but there are several well known companies up there that do advertise well their activities that even if you cant find out before you get there there will be plenty to compare with when arriving - particularly for boat/glass bottom boat trips with snorkelling and so on to get full view or experience of these reefs. plus trips out to the islands that are around there. Also dont miss the excellent trips to Kuranda - theres the train and the cablecar that takes you along above the rainforest so one for each trip up or back - and around the beautiful Atherton tablelands. Also any trips to Daintree and Cape Tribulation and the coloured sands. Port Douglas has a beautiful beach and the Whitsundays area/Shute harbour down south of Cairns are very beautiful and advertise boat trips around there.

Hi There are Outer Reef trips, but if you want to just walk on the reff I suggest you take the ferry to Green Island, an hour offshore on the local ferry.
Good Luck, Mike
