Cape Town how to get to certain sites
Posted: Sat January 26, 2008 07:42 AM UTC
I will be staying in the De Waterkant area near VA. I would like to visit the Gold of Africa Museum, Mandela House, and Imhoff Farm (sp). I haven't been able to find tours that take me there. I was wondering what was the best way to get to these areas? For those of you who have been here, was it enjoyable or a waste of time?

Gold of Africa Museum is in the city center, walking distance (under 2km)from De Waterkant. (S33.91942 E18.41984)

Mandela House is apparently not open to the public yet, 60km from the city, out in the winelands, between Paarl and Fransch Hoek. (S33.84479 E19.01295)

Imhoff Farm (S34.14265 E18.35122) is passed by all the tours going down to Cape Point. It is a bit of a tourist trap dump and all the tours drive straight past for good reason. (half an hour from city center in light traffic)

Thank you

I am a little disappointed though. I like to do off the beaten path sort of things and was looking forward to them; especially the latter since I never rode a camel.

Good looking out

To get to Imhoff farm by public transport, take the train to Fish Hoek and then the bus or mini-bus taxi to Ocean View. Ocean View is very working class and the public transport for Ocean View is good in terms of frequency, but poor in terms of comfort or safety for a wealthy tourist. (Imhoff farm is directly across the main road from Ocean View - the camels are "parked" about 20 yards from the main road and the traffic light intersection).

If you do take that train, also consider stopping at Kalk Bay.

Hi there
I'd suggest rather go to an authentic place like Egypt, to ride a camel. These rides are along the verge of a busy and unattractive road - I agree that Imhoff is worth passing by. There is sooooo much else to see and do in Cape Town.

Wine farms here are wonderful, even if you're not into tasting, many of them also make cheeses, some of them have picnics in the grounds. The architecture is varied, lovely and some historical... some farms are not as popular so you get a more natural experience altho' not quite off the beaten track.

happy planning
