do you have an international drivers licence?? That should be all you need as I understand it if you are just holidaying. If you don't have an international licence you will not be able to driver here it takes more that 6 months to get a licence here so you can drive.
I hope that helps.

I got an international drivers licence in Australia before leaving for Europe. I'm sure that's the way it would work the other way around as well. Just go and ask where you get your drivers licence from in Italy.

Enzo, I was 4 years in Europe, the licence I renewed a couple of times by writing back to Australia. But an Australian embassy or consulate probably could have done it. Just ask where you get licences in Italy, they'll let you know.

You can get information on this website:
http://www.austroads.com.au/overseas.html Licences from most European countries are recognised. Right at the moment I have no time to investigate further. But for New Zealand I can tell you that if you stay longer than a year you have to sit a theory test and get a NZ driver's licence. Perhaps similar in Australia?

I'm from Toronto (Canada, not Australia ;) ) and rented a car from Brisbane driving to Sydney with my regular Province(State)-issued licence with no trouble at all.

I got an international drivers license through CAA before leaving Canada. In New Zealand I was not even asked to see it. I have not yet tried to rent a car in Australia but as mentioned its not that hard to get if you feel better doing it. Go to an AAA office and ask them or seach online.
