If you want water park, go to Hanoi (summer time) or HCMC. I don't think there is a lot of fun things for kids in Hoi An. It's a small town with some old buildings, but you can take them to the farm around Hoi An and see how farmers work.

By the way, please don't call our Vietnamese lunar new year as Chinese New Year. We have our own word, and we call it as "Tet".

Why kid activities must you go to Hoi An? Hoi An is a small town and a quiet place and have no live activities.
May I recommend you Hanoi and make a trip to Halong Bay and Pagoda Temple. There will be boat ride and boat stay...I think your kids will enjoyed. In fact I will be going to Hanoi during the Chinese New Year ( 2nd day ) and if you wish to know more and the itenery, you may mail me at malaysiafirehouse@yahoo.com Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions over Tet. How could we arrange to visit a farm? Also, anyone familiar with the orphanage? We were thinking about taking the kids there as well.

Travel agents in Hoi An could organize the tour for you to visit the farms. Forget the Perfume Pagoda tour (from Hanoi) as #3 said. The Kids will not want to climb mountain just to see a cave there.

If your kids enjoy cooking then I highly recommend a small cafe near the riverfront called The Blue Dragon (I think!). They offer a cooking class. You choose any three dishes you want, and they show you how and let you cook your lunch/dinner. The cost is only $8!! There are two times offered during the day, and a reservation is needed to ensure have space for you.
Hoi An is a wonderful place! I loved it, but as mentioned, it is lacking in activities geared towards children. SO CREATE YOUR OWN! If your kids like to take pictures, give each of them a disposable camera and have a "family photo contest". There are so many great scenes in the old town that you're bound to get some good shots out of the deal too! (If you do the photo contest it would probably be good to show them pictures of Hoi An from online before you arrive there) I'm not sure if you will visit other places, but if you have time, and will be further down the coast during your trip in Vietnam, your kids would certainly love the sand dunes at Mui Ne. Also, I was highly disappointed with the DMZ tour from Hue. And if you've been to Angkor Wat, then do not waste any time on the My Son Tour. It is very unimpressive. Any questions just ask! Good luck!

Well, everybody has a different opinion or experience. I found Hoi An was ok but 2 days there were enough for me. I prefer Hue. I liked DMZ tour and My Son was still interesting although I've been to Angkor temple in Cambodia, Borobudur temple in Indonesia and Bagan temples in Myanmar.
