For lodging, try: www.hostelworld.com. For bus: www.megabus.com. For train: www.amtrak.com. Gary

My choice would be the train because you're not subject to LA traffic. It's also relatively cheap ($30 or so).
If you're backpacking, you should look into the hostels. There are two right in Downtown San Diego, as well as a couple of others near the beach. http://www.hostelz.com/hostels/USA/California/San-Diego Which hostel you choose depends on what you want to do in San Diego and what your ideal accommodations are ("party" hostels versus quieter ones). Hotels in San Diego are typically $60-75 minimum. La Pensione, 500 West, Hotel Occidental and the Dolphin are all about the best you'll get for your money. The Dolphin, though, is in Point Loma and separated from most public transit (there's one bus) and attractions. hth

From LV it will take about 2 hours and 20 mins to get to S.D. If you like to surf, there are a few spots, in La Jolla that you may want to look into. A train ride from LA to SD is around 28.00 one way, if you prepay, if you pay on the train, it will cost you about 40.00 one way, so it's worth it to call ahead. Try the web site below, it's a pretty good one, with lots of hotels for you to look into
