| Saint Croix | Ferry to St. Thomas Posted: Thu January 24, 2008 11:53 PM UTC
Hi, My husband and I would like to take the ferry from S. Croix to St. Thomas but I sometimes get seasick. Has anyone taken this ferry and can tell me if the waters are usually calm or rough?

I have never taken that ferry but I know that it is a rather long ride (more than an hour?) across open water. Even with the usual calm caribbean waters, any wind can make for a choppy ride. I would suggest that you have some sort of seasick pills with you for the trip.

All depends on your definitions of what's "calm" and "rough" as well as what time of year you will be visiting the USVI, since weather conditions affect water conditions, which in turn define "calm" and "rough." When will you be there?
There are other intangible, subjective considerations besides weather, such as time of day, temperature, number of passengers, type of ferryboat, attitude of the pilot (go fast, take it easy, late meeting my girlfriend), on time or not on time, etc. Dunno, but maybe best advice is to make sure you have dramamine or any other anti-sea sickness remedies at hand to cover all contingencies. The trips between islands aren't that long in any case. Consult the USVI travel/tourist bureau for more info., and not to worry!

We would like to take the ferry from St. Croix to St. Thomas next month. I get seasick but I do use meds. I was wondering if anyone has done this run before and could tell me how it went.

I also get seasick easily, even the most calm waters bother me and make me sick. I took the ferry to St John and also St Croix when we visited St Thomas few years back, but I took pills to help me out. Talk to your doctor and ask him to give you a prescription for MECLIZINE. Start taking it a day before your trip, so the medicine has time to kick in. The waters are not calm (at least for me!). I did not get sick and was able to enjoy the ride, but I would not consider taking the ferry without the help of the medication.

Thanks, Monica for your answer. I will take scopace, which is the pill form of the patch. I guess we will go then.
