| Grand Canyon | Road trip for 3 days from Las Vegas to Canyon Posted: Thu January 24, 2008 08:21 AM UTC
My husband and I are travelling to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas on the 2nd Feb and returing on the 4th of Feb. We have booked an SUV incase of bad weather and thought that we would travel to the canyon via Hoover dam and stay the 1st night in the canyon lodging. But we are unsure what route is best to take to return to Las Vegas, taking into consideration the weather, some roads not passable-Sedona? Any tips on routes to take/where to stay the 2nd night would be gratefully accepted!
I would love to visit Zion/Bryce/Joshua tree national parks but know realistically we will not have the time? But any ideas on alternative routes that include the canyon would be greatfully accepted. Thanks. |

Return via Page, Kanab where you can stay the night and St. George, then straight down the I-15 to LV.

There's the chance of bad weather, but it's unlikely. When it does snow a lot in Northern Arizona, the roads are usually back open in about a day.
I'd say stay in the Canyon as long as you can. If you can't get in-park lodging for the second night (maybe too late), then book something at Tusayan, Flagstaff or Williams so that you can spend most of the day at the Canyon, and then get to the hotel in the late afternoon or evening. The northern route around the Plateau is somewhat interesting, but the Canyon is much moreso. Also, Zion and Bryce will be mostly snowed in this time of year. If you want a variation in route, there are a couple of branches of old Route 66 in Northwest AZ, one west of Kingman which goes through Oatman, and the other between Kingman and Seligman which goes through Peach Springs and the Hualapai Nation. The Oatman route, unfortunately, puts you a little out of the way, but it's really interesting.

I would go to the Grand Canyon and spend one or two nights. You are on the right rack with staying inside the park - Xanterra is the company to book through. You shouldn't have an major problems getting to Sedona via Flagstaff.
I am concerned about the ZIon portion of your trip though. I would monitor the weather, if the roads and forecast are OK to run through the lower part of Utah. then go for it. You would need to take highway 64 to hoghway 89 up to Page, AZ - then cut over to Kanab on highway 89, then north to highway 9 and into Zion. I wouldn't go to Bryce. Bryce sits at a much higher elevation and you will run into snow - Again, check the forecast. Also, including Bryce might be too much time for the window you have. If nothing else, go to the Grand Canyon and to Sedona. You can't go wrong there. Going to ZIon would be a nice drive of the roads conditions are OK. Be safe

I booked a room on Yavapai "West" for $102.00 during their busy season. You must be at the East location, which is like 20 to 30 dollars more. Sorry, the cost of staying overnight in these great areas is what it is. If we don't want to go, then that's our choice.
I've been to Ohio and Milwaukee, and feel I was paying too much for a room. At least in the Grand Canyon you can be next to one of the 7 Wonders on this Earth!
