| Krabi | krabi Vs Phi Phi Posted: Thu January 24, 2008 03:20 AM UTC
We're heading to Krabi for only about a week in April and want to know if it is worthwhile taking time out of our short stay in krabi to head to phi phi for a night or two. Is just a day trip there feasible/worthwhile?
We want to experience the people and lifestyle of southern thailand and want to know whether krabi or phi phi will offer us that... i guess we want to know is phi phi just a place to hang out with other tourists and see tourist-generated 'activities' eg thai boxing etc or are they real events among real villagers. |

Ko Phi Phi is a HEAVILY touristed area BUT with good reason: the islands are beautiful with decent diving and snorkelling. Well worth a day on one of those longtail boats island hoping. Not much culture but beautiful area.

Both Krabi and Phi Phi are occupied by tourists, however as Krabi is not an island, then you see the cahnce to see locals at their daily routines on the streets, at the markets etc. - but honestly this part of Krabi is not much attracting. Local lifestyle heavily influenced by tourist business with all consequneces of taking over guest's habits in behaviour, dress and way how they furtnish their homes.

Just came back from both Krabi and Phi phi. Ao Nang beach is the main area in Krabi for restaurants, shops etc. Its touristy but a little quiter than Patong in Phuket. Ao Nang is good for one night only I feel. Phi phi is definitely worth going just for the coral waters and a restaurant called 'Lemongrass' in the main village. I think i would prefer to actually stay on the island and not Krabi.
Speed boats leave from all over the place to do day trips to Phi Phi if you only want to go for a day. Craig

Yes, Phi Phi is worth staying at least a night or two. The atmosphere there is different from AoNang. It has the small island paradise feel to it. There are plenty of accomodations and bars on PhiPhi Island itself. There is a viewpoint that you can hike up to. There are day trips you can go around PhiPhi Don & Phiphi lei.
Krabi is good too. I would recommend you to stay away from AoNang and stay on West Railay. On West Railay, you can take swim at the nice beach, do rock climbing, and join snorkeling day trip to the islands around Krabi. If you want to see southern Thailand lifestyle, I am not sure if Krabi is the place to be... anyway, whatever you decide, I hope you have a great time in Krabi and Phi Phi.

one cant compare krabi and phi phi although they both are jewels in the andamans.
krabi - feels like a town connected to main land, people come and go and the beach are a classic to its own right. phi phi - now, that's a little corner or paradise or i would say ''as close as one can get to its gates'''. april is a nice time - hot! and the sun will be out, you wouldn't need cleaning lenses, the water is a see through glass...enjoy...
