Wadi Rum Alternatives to Wadi Rum

Hi fellow travellers

The scenery of Wadi Rum appears spectacular. No doubt, good old Lawrence of Arabia has helped to put it firmly on the tourist map. Has anybody spent some time exploring the Petra - Wadi Rum region and found accessible areas of similar beauty without the bells and whistles of organised tourism: places to which one can take a local bus or taxi, do some hiking and enjoy the sheer beauty of the desert and the local ambiance?

If you are a hiking man, you should check out the valley of palms near shobak. It is in my opinion the most beautiful hidden treasure in jordan. You can have a local tour guide from shobak to take you there, you can hunt birds too. It's spectacular, if you want more info/pics email me.

Don't miss at least one of numerous and beautiful "wadis" near Karac: you can visit them by yourself, hiking only some hours or even more days. All reachable by cheap taxi from Karac. My favourite was Wadi Bin Hammad: don't miss it!
