October is generally a good month -- although who knows, with all the climate changes going on lately? The rainy/cyclone season is generally November to March. You should be OK. On an average day on the big islands, the tradewind sweeps in from the SE, and some puffy clouds build up over the island peaks, and then there is sometimes a brief downpour in mid-afternoon.
Besides the islands you mention, you might want to consider Huahine, which is also lovely, but more low-key than the above very touristed islands. Book your inter-island flights well in advance, as they are often very full and over-booked. Or, you could consider a cruise ship circulating around in the area. There are several that you should be able to find by googling it, or use cruisecritic.com. Happy planning!
