Bend to Eugene Posted: Tue January 22, 2008 09:34 PM UTC
We are visiting relatives in Bend, OR., and while we are here would like to travel from Eugene, OR., to San Francisco by Amtrak. Have sorted this, but want to know can we get from Bend to Eugene by bus or train?? Have looked into this but cannot find a way to do it!!
Our home is in Somerset, England. We came over last year and really loved Oregon, that's why we're returning and would love to travel down the West coast to San Francisco. So if there's anybody out there who can help us we'd be very grateful

The Amtrak website is: www.amtrak.com. There are amtrak busses running from Bend to Eugene. The train runs from Eugene to Emeryville, California. You then take another amtrak bus into San Francisco. When you get to the route box on site, just type in Bend, or BED, and San Francico, or SFO. It will also show the fare. Gary

Be advised that as of two days ago a large landslide closed the tracks from Eugene to Klamath Falls. They are saying it will take longer than expected to clear the tracks. To avoid a long bus trip from Eugene to K Falls, courtesy of Amtrak, you might just take the Greyhound from Bend to K Falls, if there is one. All passengers on Amtrak between K falls and Eugene are being bused at present.

There is certainly a contrast between rail service in the UK and the US. On my first rail trip in the UK the conductor was apologizing profusely after every stop for the train being 15 minutes late. In America the train can be 15 hours late and no one in authority seems to care. Of course a landslide is the work of nature but the truth is Amtrak, especially on the West Coast, is a disaster. Welcome to America and Amtrak.

There's an Amtrak 'Thruway' bus you can take from the Amtrak Station in Bend, 1555 N.E. Forbes Road. The price of a one-way ticket to Eugene is $28. The trip takes approximately 2.5 hours.

If you are staying in bend, with no reason to go to Eugene, you can catch the train from Chemult's, which is about 60 miles south of bend. Amtrax has a thru bus that runs this service. I have looked at doing this trip myself, and I think it would be terrific. I live in the area, and know it quiet well, even though I am origonally from Australia.
If you have any more questions you can E-mail at hando32@hotmail.com.
Would be happy to answer any questions, and If I do not know I will find out for you.

The problem with the San Francisco Bay Area is that there are a large number of stations served by various entities that connect with Amtrak. Thus, you have to be very selective about what station you select to get the best routing. There are about 5 different options for San Francisco alone, for example, including "Ferry Building" and "Financial District". There are two options for Oakland, across the bay (where the long distance Amtrak trains stop because there is no long distance railroad line across the bay, except from the south).
Amtrak is saying Coast Starlight trains are cancelled until at least Feb 1, but locally there is some noise that the line may take a month or more to repair. It is in a fairly remote area.
