Hi guys,

I'm comin' to NO for the first time during mardi gras and wanna check out the best jazz pubs and non touristy restaurants around. I'm on a tight budget and would really appreciate some cost conscious recommendations !

Thanks heaps.

Hi Crystal,

New Orleans and the surrounding areas generally have lot's of good food. If you can give me an idea of what week you will be in and possible the area that you will be staying or interest it, I can give you some suggestions.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for ur response.
I'll be staying in NOLA for a week starting Saturday. Its my first time there and I'm a total Mardi Gras newbie. My only form of transport is my feet and maybe the streetcar. I will be on a hostel along Canal St.

What I really wanna eat is cheap and good "Nawlins" food... gumbo and all that. Pls don't recommend Emerils or Jacque Imos like most people did cos if I was able to afford it, I wouldn't be on this forum =(

Thanks heaps Tom!

I will assume that you will for the most part likely be traveling along Canal Street towards the river, French Quarter on St. Charles Avenue. You might want to be sure and check out http://www.nola.com/mardigras/parades/ for the latest information of the parades, schedules and routes. As far as food goes, a few distinctly New Orleans items you might want to consider while you are here include: a Muffuletta, Po-Boy or Po’Boy, red beans and rice, roman candy, pralines, café’ au lait, beignets, gumbo, andouille, a hurricane, sazerac, king cake, daiquiri. As far as jazz “pubs” go, it depends on what you are looking for. You might check out the following: Snug Harbor, Preservation Hall, Tipitina’s, also check out a local free newspaper the Gambit.

Rather than put too much information here in the forum, I sent you an email with some details.
