| Honolulu | Good but Inexpensive Hotel Rooms? Posted: Tue January 22, 2008 02:26 AM UTC
I'm thinking of taking my mom to Hawaii next month. Might anyone suggest some hotels that we could stay at? Basically just 2 criteria:
1. 3-star or better 2. Less than $125 per night for a 2-bed room Thanks for any suggestions, Robert |

Check the rates at Ilima Hotel, Waikiki Joy Hotel, Hotel Sand Villa, and Hawaiiana Hotel At Waikiki.

Add the Breakers to the list (www.breakers-hawaii.com). It's actually next door to the Hawaiiana. We stay there every time we're in Honolulu. Where all are you planning on going? Just HNL?

Hi Andy,
There are 2 reasons I'm thinking of going to Hawaii next month: 1. It has been miserable here in Vancouver ... except for this week. 2. My mom's turning 76, has never been to Hawaii, and would love to go. Our plan would be to mostly plant ourself at the hotel and walk and take public transit. But on a few days we would rent a car to see other parts of Oahu. Do you think this hotel you mentioned would give us a discount if we stayed for a week? Robert

I'm not sure. It never hurts to ask. But the great thing about the Breakers is that the rooms has kitchenettes so you can eat in, they also have a good Japanese restaurant, there are many good restaurants within a 5-minute walk, and while it's right in Waikiki, it's on a small quiet street. Ask for a room upstairs makai, meaning on the ocean side of the hotel. The sun hits the rooms on the other side in the afternoon and can heat them up pretty good. Oh, and the upstairs rooms have nice lanais (balconies) as well. I will say that the hotel was built in the '50s and the rooms can sometimes seem as dated. But they did a modest remodel about 5 years ago so it's much nicer. Part of the charm I say!

Andy,
Okay, I will inquire with them. I have a general question for you, something I really don't understand. In my research I keep on seeing Air & Hotel packages for various prices. For example, one might say "Air & Hotel to Hawaii for one week per person". What I don't understand is, if 2 people are going then why should the cost be double? Because, if they're sharing a hotel room then you don't pay double the price. Can you explain this? Robert

You might want to consider the Park Shore Waikiki. Its a three star, almost four star hotel that right at the end of the hotel strip, right across the street from the beach. The Honolulu Zoo is next door and their are many public buses that run past the hotel. Additionally the Diamond Head Crater is a 8 minute bus ride from the hotel. If you want more information on the hotel you can check out my Honolulu page, otherwise just google Park Shore Waikiki and it will pull up multiple sites you can book from. Definitely price check the sites as I saved $20 a night by doing that. Last time I was there it was about $80 a night, but they were in the middle of renovating to upgrade their star status so I imagine the rates went up a bit. By the way I highly recommend booking a Pearl Harbor/USS Missouri combo tour online, its much cheaper than booking at any of the hotels. Assuming of course you want to see Pearl Harbor!

I agree that the Park Shore is a very nice, now a highly priced hotel in Waikiki. It is not easy to find a 2-bedroom hotel accommodation in Waikiki without a kitchenette. There is one that is not a 3-star but clean, and only a block off the beach. Royal Grove is older, but the service is there and they do have a two bedroom kitchenette. Make sure the room does have A/C, as a few don't. See their website at:www.royalgrovehotel.com

Larry,
Just want to be sure, you're recommending the Royal Grove? The prices look very good. I just want to be sure that I'm not taking my mom to a dump or some place that is unsafe. Please let me know, Robert

Hi Robert,
I can't answer your question about the package prices. I totally agree with your reasoning. Maybe you need to email the booking agent about booking the same package for double occupancy. I'll also add that the Breakers is just a half-block from the beach. Definitely walk to the Halekulani (also only a half-block from the Breakers), one of the higher-end hotels in Honolulu, and have pupus and drinks at the House Without A Key and watch the sunset and partake in the great entertainment (not cheesy) they have each night.

Andy,
I've written them twice now but received no response. Maybe I should offer to rebuild their website for them! Robert

Robert, the Royal Grove is not a 3-star hotel but it is under the $125 you say is criteria. It is more old hawaii in decor and that means the furnishings are not the greatest. If you are trying to find a hotel in Waikiki for under $125 or even close, it will be hard to come by. Your best bet is to check out the Ohana chain. They might have a couple hotels that will come close to your criteria, like the Ohana West. See their website: www.ohanahotels.com

Yeah, their website isn't the best. I have always found it best to call them. They work better that way. Hey, they're old school!

Hi Everyone,
It looks pretty certain that I can get a 3 - 4 star condo for $50 per day if I keep it for 30 days. Thankfully I have that sort of flexibility (have laptop can travel) so I'm thinking about going for it. My mom, though, will only stay for 2.5 weeks. I remember VT Member, Keida84, talking about certain items that one should bring to Hawaii because they're very expensive there. Cereal comes to mind. Any other things that you'd recommend we bring with us? Robert

Thank you for that link! I should have come back here to update you all. Through Craigslist I found a great condo to rent for 30 days for just $1400. I've talked with some in the know there and apparently it's quite a good deal.
All of you actually living in Honolulu may be interested in this: http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/vol/551792061.html I've received some interest so far but would like more. Remember, we don't need all techs, though we do indeed need a few. I promise you that it'll be one of the most rewarding things you ever do! Robert P.S. I'll be there as of Feb 17th. Hope to meet some local VT'ers!!
