Granada 1st time in Granada
Posted: Mon January 21, 2008 08:28 AM UTC
Hi all! I've been to Spain a couple of times but it will be my first time to Granada. I am taking some friends of mine with me. What would be a nice 2 to 3 star hotel in the city center, ranging from around 70 to 90 Euros for a double standard room you can recommend?
What food and restaurant can anyone recommend to try in the area of the old city or city center?
Thanks!

Hi! Afraid I've only stopped in hostels in Granada, but I find Venere.com to be a good site for chosing hotels - Accommodation is listed in price order/ popularity/area etc, with reviews from people Who've stayed there.

As You probably know, Granada is one of the remaining cities that offer free tapas with drinks, so I'd recommend trying the bars on Calle Navas or around Elvira for this experience.

Between Elvira and Albaicin, You'll come across an area that is like Morocco, with tea houses - teterias - a chance to chose from hundreds of teas or fresh squeezed juices, and maybe try a nargille (hubba bubba pipe)

In High Albaicin, there are restaurants serving local specialities such as Rabbo de Torro - Bulls tail - I tried this dish at Hornade Paquito, a nice restaurant in C/San Buenaventura Albaicin.

For a breakfast or mid morning treat try Churros (doughnut like fingers) that You dip into your Hot Chocolate drink. I've not tried this myself yet, but there are cafes in Plazza Bib-Rambla to try this - This is one of my favourite squares in Granada.

Please check out other VTers pages for more recommendations on hotels and restaurants, and feel free to contact me again for more info.

Best Wishes,
Sue

The Alhambra is (of course) a must! Buy your tickets as far ahead of time as possible- you have to state the day and timeslot you would like to enter the palaces. The BBVA bank is the best place to get them once you're there or buy online from the official Alhambra website. You can enter the grounds for free through a side gate but you won't get to see the gardens, palaces or fortress or baths.
Granada is the best city to see a flamenco performance from world reknowned artists, but be careful about the caves as a few are a ripoff. There is a theatre in Sacramonte "La Chumbera" (Estudio De Los Gitanos) with amazing views which the tourist info doesn't promote much.
I think Cafe Futbol (in the same square(Plaza Mariana Pineda)as Tourist Info) is less touristy place to go for churros.
Have a great trip

I liked the Hotel Dauro. It was around 65 euro for doble room and though it was smallish, it was right across the street from the Corte Ingles where I liked going for breakfast because it was cheap and good, plus I could always find stuff I needed in that department store that I forgot to pack (hairspray, curling iron etc, phone card). I could walk from Hotel Dauro to most places all over Granada quickly, because it was kind of in the center and some of the most exciting places of the city like near the Gran Via and other major streets and plazas which was cool because it was the week of the feria when I went so I didn't miss the processions or parties.

As for restaurantes, well, that was kind of hit or miss. I went to Plaza Bibrambla and other nearby plazas and side streets about 10-15 minutes walk from my hotel and ate at the cafes there sometimes for lunch or just meandered around that whole area down the Gran Via and found a good Moroccan place, decent bars with sandwiches, etc. For tapas, you go to the plazas in the evening and you can usually find a decent tapa place, or up in near the Alhambra, maybe in Barrio Realejo, I think it was a plaza called "Campo del Principe", there were a string of tapas bars that gave us HUMONGOUS plates of tapas with just a drink order, even non-alcoholic drinks they just give you tapas, so some tapas are better than others! Though since it's free you can't complain!

Oh yes Cafe Futbol!! ja ja I went there because it was near my hotel and my Spanish friends recommended it. I had some amusing times there with the waiters because sometimes they were so SWAMPED at that popular place. The guys would run from across the street from the restaurante to the patio with trays and it was always like 30 tables per waiter, so naturally the poor waiters were kind of forgetful and grumpy sometimes, so if it looks busy....maybe you might choose another time!! But their churros (and ice cream) were good!
