We are planning a trip to White Sands and would like to stay at a nice place within an hour of White Sands.

How much do you want to spend?
The choices are Las Cruces and Alamogordo. Alamogordo is slightly closer, but I very much prefer LC because it's just a better town (IMHO) with more things to do and better restaurants. Las Cruces usually has excellent hotel deals as well.

There are several quaint hotels in Ruidoso and is within the 1 hour distance of White Sands that you requested. Ruidoso itself is a wonderful little town in the mountains with dozens upon dozens of boutique shops and some great restaurants. Inn of the Mountain Gods is a popular place to stay. It's on a reservation and they have a casino. There is also some decent skiing at Ski Apache. Additional things to do in the area is to visit Lincoln, NM to see where Billy the Kid was shot, and the Valley of Fires to see some amazing lava fields. Even though it is winter and Ruidoso is in the mountains, the weather should still be quite temperate (depending where you are from).

Alamogordo is also quite close to White Sands, but there is much less to do there than Ruidoso. Las Cruces is another option, but is a college town. You'll have plenty to do there, but I think the best bet is Ruidoso.

Have fun jumping the dunes!
