Hello, I’m Paul.....
Im planning a coast to coast trip to the USA between 31/05/08 and 12/07/08 starting in New York and finishing in LA, with my girlfriend and would really be grateful for any advice given. I have a few questions.... Is six weeks long enough to travel? Is £3000 excluding flights for 2 people enough cash? What accommodation would you recommend? What methods of travel are best? Does anyone know a fairly pleasant but cheap hotel in New York? We were looking at Greyhound and Amtrack but not sure which is the best option, kinda worried about the accommodation situation too. Another thing is my girlfriend is 20 and is able to drive, is this possible in the USA? She would only drive for around 2 weeks. Thinking of visting New York, Niagra Falls, Chicago, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon.... do you recommend any other places? Any general advice? Thank you very much, any replies would be grateful. Paul |

Five sites that might be of help during parts of your trip: (1) www.hostelworld.com, (2) www.virginamerica.com, (3) www.southwest.com, (4) www.megabus.com & (5) www.a2zlasvegas.com. Greyhound is not really a good travel option, and Amtrak doesn't travel to some of the areas you wish to visit. The train does , however, keep you from having to drive. The problems for you with car rental would be age, and high drop-off fees if you rent the vehicle in one city, and return it in another. Two possible destinations to think about, San Francisco and Seattle. Gary

Hotels will average about $100 (50 GBP) per night. More in cities, less in small towns. Look for some bargins and be flexible. In places like national parks, you need to book hotels ahead.
For the longer distances I would look at Amtrak, they have a northern route that runs from Chicago to Wahington State. It runs out across the great plains and through the northern Rocky Mountains in Montana. The distances from Chicago west are so long that I would avoid buses. You can take the train down the west coast to San Francisco and or LA. Enjoy! David

I agree with the above on the "Go to San Fran and not LA".
LA is a sprawling mass of suburbs with no real "feel" whatsoever...with Hollywood being a tourist disappointment. San Fran is beautiful...wineries are close or take a drive south to Monterey and Pebble Beach - simply gorgeous. If you don't want to do any sections on land, have a look at Southwest Airlines - very cheap tickets. Enjoy! Great trip.
