| Umbria | Traveling into the town of Orvieto Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 02:49 PM UTC
In viewing Rick Steves guide to actual travel into the main town, he relates private vehicles are not allowed. There seems to be a bus that you can get that takes you up into the main piazza. The question is on what route do you find this bus, and how much is the cost and hours in operation? Is this information correct? Thank you for your reply! Sararosa

You can drive to a car park just outside the walls - which is where the bus will drop you off as well. I am sorry but I am not sure about the bus number/cost but would guess that you could catch a bus from Rome.Private vehicles are restricted in many hill towns, walled towns and in some of the major cities - but there is usually a car park nearby as well as an area for the busses - both tour and public - to drop off passengers.

You can also consider to go walking from the parking. I did so and it wasn't a long walk, perhaps 10 minutes.

Hi Sergio; I love to hike and walk. So a ten minute walk into town is a great idea! Thanks for that information. It makes a big difference when you know what your options are, and what to expect. Sararosa

Many cities and major towns have restricted zones where only residents can drive, during restricted hours.
Orvieto has a parking lot next to the train station that has a funiculare that lifts you up to the upper town. Another set of parking lots have an elevator and also an escalator that takes you through the tufa rock that the city is on. Once you get to the upper town, nothing is a very far walk.
