Departamento de Huehuetenango Trying to get from Huehue to Tikal
Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 09:15 AM UTC
Hi there, wondering if anyone out there has some specific details re: getting from Huehuetenango to Tikal via Coban? I hear the road offers amazing views but it seems that the bus service is rather infrequent. I can't seem to find anyone who offers this route on shuttles either...do any of you know of a company that offers shuttles along this bumpy road?
Failing that, I will use private transfers. Any good budget-company recommendations for that? The ones I've contacted all seem VERY expensive (350.00usd).
Lastly, has anyone done this route? I am wondering how long it will take in a shuttle or private transfer...I'm guessing about 12 hours?
Thanks for any help.

Hey man.
I rode the Coban to Tikal way in my previous trip here, 3 years ago. Most of the way is paved (from Coban go via Chisec, this is probably faster).
Exactly today I finished riding the Coban to Huehue road. It's now mostly paved too, and there are frequent minibuses - in addition to pickups, buses, and tiny taxis between the villages. The only place which is very slow is close to Coban, where they still work on paving the way - and frequently totally close the road for a few hours for theirs work! and this is true in any vehicle you use (well, beside mountain bike).
Finally, I don't think you can due Huehue to Coban in 1 day. Probably you will have to stop somewhere on the way.
