Hi John,
Haifa, especially the area of German colony, suggests some very good Oriental restaurants, which are open on Friday too.
Pls check this:

Look for restaurants like Abu Zaid's, for example, that ran by Christian Arabs in week ends, as well.

Try the Oriental restaurants in Druz village of Osfiya & Dalyat el karmel.
In Haifa there is even public transportation working in Shabbat.

Cool, so I can get my daily allocation of beer without any hassles. I have been three times prior but I always stayed on kibbutz Ramat Yochanan for Shabbat. This time we are having a kibbutz reunion, with volunteers from all over the world, so we will all be back in Haifa at night.

No problem finding pubs and restaurants open on Friday night. The German colony is nice, there are some OK restaurants there, but if you are looking for pubs I would suggest either walking a little towards the port or taking a taxi or bus to one of the places on the Carmel mountain (Hanasi and Moriah boulevards).

The places I remember at the lower city are: Ha-Ogen (3 Palmer Gate st.), The Godfather (30 Kdoshey Bagdad) and Kalman's (3 Ha-Namal st.). These three are pubs with some typical pub food (roast beef, sauages, etc.) There is also a new restaurant around there which I heard good things about called "Ha-Namal 24", which strangely enough is located at 24 Ha-Namal st.

If you go up the Carmel mountain. You can find a lot of pubs along Hanasi and Moriah. Like "The Bear Inn", Duke, Barbarosa, Maidler's, Frangelico, Gobbi (a dance bar).

If you can deal with a little Hebrew, you can find more at: http://rest.co.il/bar/Default.asp?txtActionID=4&txtTypeID=12&txtRegionID=2&txtCityID=167&txtAddress=&chkKosher=&chkKosherMehadrin=&CurrentPage=1#pageStart

The Carmelit doesn't work on Friday evening and Saturdays, but the Haifa buses do. And, in any case there shouldn't be a problem getting taxi. The places I mention next to the port are walking distance (5 minutes) from the German colony.

As a rule you shouldn't have any problem getting a taxi over the weekend even in religious places like Jerusalem. It is certainly not a problem in places like Haifa or Tel-Aviv.
