I am planning a stopover in penang on route to Bangkok.
Does anyone know of some old style colonial (for want of a better word) type hotels, in or near Penang. Or at least some with character and history. Thanks and much appreciated. Steve |

Hey there Steve, I would recommend you Lone Pine Hotel. Which is also owned by E&O Group of Companies. The hotel has been there since 1948. Check out their website for more information. http://www.lonepinehotel.com

Hi Steve, E&O Hotel fits the description of what you are looking for. Stayed with my family sometime back. It was a 3 days stay and it was glorious. The Eastern & Oriental Hotel just exudes the old British colonial architecture and charm. The service is impecable. And the nightlife entertainment is just within walking distance from the hotel where the most happening place in Penang is situated, its called the Upper Penang Road. Where you will find delicious local hawker fare to continental cuisine. There's quite a selection of pubs, bars and clubs too if you need to chill out or party thru the night. I hope this link http://www.penanghotels.com.my/eastern-oriental-hotel/ will help you as it did for me when I was searching for hotels to stay in Penang. May you have a memorable stay in Penang as my family and I have. Cheers

E & O Hotel (Farquhar Street, at the end of Penang Road), Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Leith Street) has themed accommodation rooms and Bellevue Hotel (on top of Penang Hill) has loads of history but expensive.
There are many old Chinese mansions turned into budget and backpacker hotels. They are found mainly at Leith Street, Chulia Street and Love Lane in George Town which are adjoining streets.
