Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Girona Montserrat
Posted: Fri January 18, 2008 10:29 AM UTC
We'll be staying in Roses on the Costa Brava and wonder if it is possible to travel to Montserrat and back in one day. We'll have a car, but I can't find any direct routes. Perhaps drive to outskirts of Barcelona, leave the car there, and take public transportation? How long should we allow for this?

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Yes it's doable, the trip by car should take you about 2 hours (each way)

I'd take the AP7 from Roses to Sabadell, continue along C-58 towards Manresa and later head to Monistrol de Montserrat. Leave the car here and take the cable car to the Monastery. Not only adding a fun activity to your day, it's less hassle than parking at the top :)

If you like mountaineering, pack your hiking boots and walk down to the monastery after taking the rack-train to Sant Joan's peak. It takes about 3 hours and the views are breathtaking. We usually grab some food at the market and have lunch somewhere in the mountains. In any case, you can enjoy very nice views from Sant Joan, do not miss this.

If you're into art, there is a very good museum underground the Monastery's square, that most visitors miss.

In any case, leave very early, there is a lot to do there :)

The hiking down does sound wonderful. We'll be going in late February, though, so it's possible the weather might not cooperate (rain, cold winds, etc.). Thanks very much for the information.

Yes it will be very cold on February. Hopef you'll have a clear day, it tends to be foggy in Winter. It may add some mystery to the mountains indeed if the fog is not very dense. Sometimes there is fog at the monastery level but not on the peaks, then the views over the "sea of clouds" are even more amazing. Keep your fingers crossed!
