| Tallinn | Personal guide in Tallinn Posted: Fri January 18, 2008 09:57 AM UTC
Hello! We are a group of 4 people coming to Tallinn in March, would you recommend a company to book an English speaking private guide? Or is it enough to walk around by yourself?
Thank you! |

Tallinn is the most amazing experience and if you want you can easily tour the town without a guide. The old town within the walls is very compact and easy to navigate.

You don't need a guide if you do your research, and the tourist focused part of Tallinn is a relatively small size to cover on foot. If you are short on time and want to get a guide anyway, the Tallinn tourist info centre offers guided tours and do-it-yourself audio tours. The guides are very knowledgeable and if you are interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of the city it may be worth it. I don't think they cover Kadriorg or Pirita though.

I agree that the old town is very small and beautiful, and can be enjoyed on one's own or with a guide book.
I had visited Tallinn several times on my own, and then when I went there with family, I took a guide who was really charming and made the trip much better. The hotel and guide was organised by a local company con-ex http://www.con-ex.ee/page/367 The guide gave us good restaurant tips too. Anyway, have a good trip! PS March can still be quite chilly in the Baltics, and when the wind blows it feels like it is taking your ears off! I have been there in April and there has still been ice in the sea!

If you stay in the area of the Old Town (Vanalinn) or other parts of the city center, you'll be fine without a guide. Stop at the tourist information center in the Old Town and they'll provide maps and info.
If you wanted to travel outside the immediate downtown area to other parts of the city farther out, I'd recommend someone to guide you around. Have fun!
