| Orvieto | Orvieto area sightseeing - bus or train, no car Posted: Thu January 17, 2008 08:30 PM UTC
Planning to spend 3 nights in Orvieto in May, arriving there from Rome by train and departing there by train to Venice. I know we can get a bus to Civita so will do that. Not much interested in going to Florence, have been there before. Any other towns that are an easy travel distance from Orvieto for a day trip and can be reached by bus or train? Todi? Spoleto? Interested in soaking up some small town ambience between our stay in Rome and our stay in Venice. Any suggestions much appreciated.

If you haven't been to Assisi that would be an option for a day trip. Two hours by train from Orvieto, usually one change en route.

On the direct line from Orvieto to Bologna (where you would change for Venice) you could stop at Arezzo and Cortona (Camucia station), both very pleasant towns. Cortona is the more spectacularly sited and fully medieval of the two, but very small indeed. Arezzo has a very fine provincial museum and the great Piero della Francesca fresco cycle in the big church on the market square (name escapes me at the moment...)

Thank you both. I have done a little more research and understand the drive from Orvieto to Todi is quite scenic. Does anyone know about the bus from Orvieto to Todi? I cannot find a web site in English to give any details. We will only be in Orvieto 3 nights. One day to explore Orvieto, one day to go to Civita di Bagnoregio and relax in Orvieto and thought that maybe a bus to Todi would be interesting....
