Road Trip Ontario/New England Posted: Wed January 16, 2008 07:39 PM UTC
Hi
We are planning a road trip starting Toronto to Ottawa to Montreal to Boston to Niagra Falls then flight back to England.
21 days in all. Could anyone give advice on best route from Montreal to Boston to include all must see must do places. Want the best experience of New England as possible. We are a couple with no kids on this vacation, so no retrictions.
Hope to visit late July, early August
Many thanks

I suspect you are flying into and out of Toronto, but that makes an awful lot of driving. It may be possible for you to fly into Toronto and out of Boston at little or no cost. I would highly recommend trying to do that, even if you have to pay a penalty.
The trip from Boston to Niagara Falls is around 9 or 10 hours of a very boring ride. Niagara Falls is only an hour or so from Toronto, so you could do that on the "front" end.
From Montreal, the best route is Interstate 89 south once you reach the US. You can stop in Burlington, Vermont on the way. In New Hampshire, you switch to 93 South heading right into Boston. There are several cities and towns enroute if you wish to stop again. It's a little over an hour from Montreal to Burlington and another 4 hours to Boston. You'll be going through the Green Mountains in Vermont and the White Mountains in NH, a nice ride.

Hi alansm
I agree it would be better to fly to Toronto and return from Boston but the one way drop off fee for the car hire would drive up cost. It will probably be worth the 10 hour drive, we should have time to relax in Niagara before the return flight
Many thanks

There are several ways you can go:--take 87 south through the edge of the Adirondacks in NY State connecting to 90 East to Boston, or 89 South through Vermont and New Hampshire, also very pretty and probably faster. I believe 89 skirts Lake Champlain which is a beautiful stop that time of year.
An alternate route is taking 10 East out of Montreal to 91 South to 93 South into Boston. This cuts through the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont which is absolutely gorgeous and mountainous. I think pretty much any route you take of those three will be good and you're traveling at a great time of year when the weather is warm and you can stop for a swim in any of the mountain rivers--very refreshing!! Been there, done that :)

I've always taken 10 to 89 South, to 93 south. Depending on your speed (and your stop at the border) it will take between 4.5-5.5 hours to hit Boston.
