San Carlos de Bariloche rental cars in Bariloche that allow travel into Chile?
Posted: Wed January 16, 2008 04:33 PM UTC
we are considering renting a car in Bariloche and opting to drive to Lake District vs doing the Lake Crossing by boat/bus. We plan to rent a car for a week, returning to Bariloche. Our trip is for April 7-14or 15th. Any suggestions for rental car company, costs, roads for personal car for this trip, scenic routes to take? Any and all info appreciated

Try www.Alamo.com.ar or www.patagonia-car-rental.com

The road for the lake route from Bariloche is in extremly bad condition and during my trip in Dec `07 there was some construction taking place as well.By the time you get to Largo Traful you are fedup with driving at 15 to 20 miles an hour on a corigated and stone filled dirt road.

My advice to you would be to take the RN237 from Bariloche to Junin de Los Andes and turn left on the RP65 to Villa Traful and carry on to San Martin de los Andes.

Even rent a car has been good for our guests. Day trip to El Bolson on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday is worthy.

The road was fine in January this year. It isn't all paved on the Argentine side so you would have to go slow if it is raining. This is the most direct route from Bariloche to Chile.
On the Chilean side you go through some very beautiful scenery and Puyehue national park. It should take about 6 hours, depending on delays at customs, to get to Puerto Varas. You go through Ensenada where there are some nice places to stay. You also go past the Termas de Puyehue all-inclusive resort.
Bypass Osorno as it is nicer to stay further on in Puerto Varas.
There are a choice of good buses that do the route if you do not want to drive it. The bus will cost about US$20 each. You could then rent a car on the Chilean side for exploring.
